On Artificial Intelligence
The Arts are under threat from potentially cheaper content from artificial intelligence, creating text, pictures, and video. These creations are anonymous, yet they may be proposed to compete for awards, contracts, and other services. There is no legislation to control AI in any Western country.
The television industry so far has refused to say they will not use cheaper AI sources instead of paying writers. This has sharpened the focus of the WGA writer’s strike, and has become a topic of conversation across the publishing industry. Most TV shows seem to be allegedly “unscripted” reality shows, contests, with tired police procedurals and other standard fare becoming more rare.
What is artificial intelligence? AI is just software. Those developing this algorithm have fed the algorithm with social media posts, as well as other web content, published materials, and nobody seems to be sure what else. To create an AI file, you provide some parameters by way of compatible commands and some text input. But AI doesn’t create anything. It provides text - or whatever output - based on what it finds. It emulates what others have written in a believable sense. So on average, AI writing and graphics are mediocre. Sure, it’s great technology, and I can see using it as a tool. At this point though it just doesn’t tell a good story. AI can’t give us anything like To Kill A Mockingbird, Grapes of Wrath, 2001, Star Trek, and the list is long.
Are you ready to compete against AI? We think it all starts with a solid manuscript to submit or to self publish. Foreword.ink wants to help every writer to create the best manuscript they possibly can, in order to put their best foot forward for either self or traditional publishing.
